I recently started on antidepressants after a lot of personal concerns about doing so. About a week after starting them I happened upon this book at the library. It really eased a lot of my concerns about becoming dependent on medicine for happiness and relief from anxiety and depression. I think it's a great resource for anyone who would like to try other strategies before taking medicine, or in addition to taking medicine. I also think this book is a great reminder that medicine and therapy may not be available or effective for a lot of people. It provides alternative methods to find relief and joy within our bodies.
In conclusion, this book is wonderful. It provides great advice to help people cope with depression, anxiety, and stress. I was initially worried about the content and quality because the title felt like it might discredit medicine or therapy, but it's actually the exact opposite of that. This book is mainly to promote the fact that medicine or therapy in themselves may not work for certain people, or are merely one piece of the puzzle when it comes to mental and physical health care. Great advice, wonderful research and case studies, and a caring delivery.

For so many years, the standard protocol for treating depression, PTSD, or any other clinical diagnosis with symptoms of depression, anxiety, or panic was pharmaceuticals and psychotherapy. This protocol was helpful to a point. But many people were still left struggling with their symptoms--wishing desperately that there was something else to help them heal. In The Instinct to Heal, psychiatrist and neuroscientist David Servan-Schreiber describes alternative treatments that build on the body's relationship to the brain. The seven methods Servan-Schreiber describes are not the simplistic "think-happy-be-happy" suggestions offered by people with absolutely no understanding of mental health issues. The methods described in The Instinct to Heal have been researched and studies documenting their benefits have been published in prestigious scientific journals. These methods include heart rate variability training (I do at least 20 minutes of Heart Coherence every day...it works!), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR works especially well for PTSD), resetting your biological clock with dawn simulation, acupuncture, etc. If drugs and psychotherapy haven't gotten you to the place you want to be, read this book! And, do what it says.
Another great and informative book on alternative treatments -
This is one of the best health related books that I have ever read. It is also very well-written and easy to understand. I have already tried some of the techniques in the book and I plan to try most of the others. I liked how he gave scientific evidence to back things up but that he was also willing to go out on a limb and say some of his theories as well. He points out what he can back up and what is not scientifically supported yet but what he sees as promising.
