After making my way through the first two books due to my internal sense of order, I feel like here is where we finally hit our stride. This book actually won an award for Best Norwegian crime novel and I can see why, although obviously I am reading it in translation. A poor job can make or break a book, though, and this read quite well, so kudos to the translator.
Admittedly, The Redbreast took a bit to get going, but once it did, I HAD to finish it to see what happened. I was a bit at sea about some of the historical bits, not being as familiar with that theatre of war, but it makes sense why Nesbo would not over-explain this to his own countryfolk.

Šoreiz jāsaka,ka no sākuma īsti neizpratu ko šoreiz Harijs Hols izmeklēs.

I have become a huge Jo Nesbo fan. If you haven't checked him out, you're missing out.

Probably more like 3.5 stars. Solid Scandinavian thriller. Would love to read more of the Harry Hole series.

I'm not sure what it means to completely forget a book before having a chance to rate it. Hence, the two-star rating. I've always been a Henning Mankell kind of gal. I'll give Nesbo another chance. This one just didn't do it for me.

Elements I liked:
1. The mystery on the Eastern front was intriguing and satisfying. The connection to the present mystery was also interesting and it was good that the murderer was in some sense more a nationalist than a fascist.
2. I like the parts where Harry is making inquiries and connecting dots.
3. I like Ellen as a character and the part of the book after her death with Harry's calls. That was moving.
4. The fascist, Sverne, was well-characterised.
Elements I disliked:
1. The entire subplot with Helena felt very overwritten with a fairly unsatisfying conclusion.
2. As was the case in the Snowman, the conclusion is just coincidentally revealed to Harry, in a unsatisfactory way.
3. I feel a bit ambivalent about Rakel as a character, and particularly what recommends her as a love interest besides being hot.

The page count is wrong on this book, it's nearly double the amount Goodreads has listed. Which didn't help me like it any more. It was just meh, for me. I like Harry Hole (the detective) but I'm just about sick of WWII stories. Add to that that I'm sick of mysteries, too, and it doesn't make for a good review. I made it through, however, and would likely read Nesbo again since this is the only one dealing with that time period that I know of...

Finally! This was rather entertaining and despite being slow on the uptake, this was much better than the previous two books. Harry Hole is a bit less of an asshole in this book and actually shows some genuine feelings. He does have some lapses of judgement and falling into his drunken habits, but is nonetheless more likeable than before.
Harry Hole is moved into some other department following one of his lapses in judgement. He begins to follow the trails of an expensive and unusual weapon which has been smuggled into Norway. Intertwined is the story of a Norwegian soldier, fighting for the Germans. How this all fits together takes forever to figure out and I must admit I couldn't quite figure it out. The purpose of the smuggled weapon was far more obvious.
All in all this book has some truly riveting episodes where I bit my nails and held my breath and pulled my hair. It's a good thing the Norwegian woods are so empty of people, since I was listening to this and couldn't quite hold back gasps of shock. Much, much better than the previous. It's a shame the next on in the series is on a subject I really don't want to hear about. Finding something to listen to is becoming increasingly difficult.
