I really loved most of the characters of this book and appreciated Roku. I think that the shift from sozin was unnaturally sudden which felt weird and there is a lot more that I want to see from this era. It was also sad how little time sozin spent at the library.

4 star plot with 2 star writing. The writing was so bad I don’t have the energy to write an actual review.
Ok. It’s been a day so I came back to edit my review. Originally, 3 stars to cut the difference between the plot and the writing, but on further reflection, the writing is so bad that it’s down to 2.
There are SO MANY TYPOS. At one point, the author mixes up characters names and dialogue, attributing statements to one character that are OBVIOUSLY being made by another (Obvious, because of the way it references bending and the context of the statement). There were other typos, like “again” instead of “against” later in the book. It pulled me out each time.
But aside from the typos, the references to the original series were so aggressive that it literally made me stop reading for a few minutes to process how the lore of the show changes with the fan service that’s being provided in this “canon” book. I want to keep this spoiler free, but the one thing I will include because it’s not really a spoiler and a great example of what I’m talking about: The Great Comet is set to arrive in 44 years from the events of the book. The Great Comet is what is eventually renamed Sozin’s comet. Both Roku and Sozjn are 17/18 (being generous here) at the time of the book. Roku dies before the comet comes, so you’re telling me he dies in his 50s?? I’m sorry, does that man look like he’s in his 50s in the show? BFFR.
Overall, it reads like fanfiction. The character development is really weak and relies heavily on the reader already knowing who these characters are because of the show. No new ideological/moral/ethical questions are presented and worked through. The author engages in A LOT of “telling” and way too little “showing” (I’m sure the author thinks he wrote a compelling relationship between Sozin and Roku, but you can’t just repeat “they love each other” over and over while they’re actions show something different…plus where does this leave the characters to grow and change over the next (apparently) 40 years?)
Honestly, it’s 2 stars because once I started reading it like fanfiction, I enjoyed it. If this was posted on AO3, I would’ve given it like 4.5 stars. But it’s not. It’s an official book that has canonized ret-cons of the series. It’s insulting how little thought went into this book compared to the last 4.

Another great addition to the Chronicles of the Avatar series, even with a new author its still going strong. Always love expanding the Avatar universe, so cool and interesting.

Out of all the books in this series, we know the most about Roku from the show before actually going into the books. I couldn't help but be,,, disappointed knowing what eventually happens. I love Gyatso and HATE Sozin and can't wait for the next one
