A decent addition to the Avatar universe. Didn't love it as much as Kyoshi, but the closer ties to the original show made it more entertaining than it would have been otherwise. But that ended up being a bit of a double-edged sword. We already knew a lot about Roku, and some of it ended up feeling like fan service.

A fun, easy YA read to cleanse the palette. I was interested how this would be with a new Avatar and a new author. I'd say it's a slight step down, but still very fun and pretty much what you want from this type of read still.

More straightforward adventure novel than previous books in the series, less political intrigue, character depth, cheesier dialogue.

I enjoy the Avatar universe and will keep reading these as they release.

I enjoyed this book, even if the beginning was sluggish... This book gives us insight into the struggles and growth of young Roku (as well as other recognizable characters from the TV show like Sozin and Gyatso), which foreshadows what we already know about the future from the TV series. Having insight into a Fire Nation’s perspective of an avatar and the expectations and culture under which a fire avatar would face was interesting to learn and see represented. I’ll be looking forward to future Roku books and watching this avatar mature in their role and learn the other elements. And yay for sky bisons! <3 Yip Yip! Hooray!

This was probably my least favorite of the chronicles of the avatar , mainly because we already know alot about Roku's story for avatar the last airbender.
However, it was nice to see the start of Sozin's tyranny.

Great story, but has a bit of an over-reliance on references to the TV show. Some references feel forced or contradict the original source.
