If you are a fan of avatar the last airbender, you will love this book. The connections to the main series are fantastic.

I loved that this was as much a Sozin origin story as it was a Roku novel. The further fleshing out of the antagonist and the Nation that set all of the events of ATLA into motion is deeply satisfying, even if the plot seems to otherwise lull at times.

This started off slower than the books about Kyoshi and Yangchen, but eventually I couldn't put it down like the other Avatar books.  As with the four books of the Avatar series, this time we see the beginning of Avatar Roku and his beginning as the Avatar.  Immediately we learn what Roku's weakness is, being indecisive and trying to be something he's not.  With Roku, we lean that he only has his firebending and that's it.  It isn't until the end of the book that Roku is able to bend air and earth.  His team Avatar is at its beginning as he only has his Airbender friend Gyatso (who is having problems air bending).  Later we meet Malaya, a non-bender.  She is one character who is later
killed
.  Honestly,  I felt that it was unnecessary as she would have been a great character to continue on as a companion of the Avatar.  This is another great addition to the Avatar series and I'm looking forward to reading the next book of Roku.

I really enjoyed reading this book, I felt immersed in the world of Avatar and was super interested in Roku's story. I loved the way Ribay portrayed Sozin differently when it was from Roku's perspective, versus everyone else's. The story was a little predictable, but overall I think it turned out really well.
