les contes étaient sympas, mon préféré restant Boule de Suif. Certains étaient un peu vide mais dans l'ensembre ce fut une lecture agréable.

My favorite experience whilst reading this book was in French class itself when my French professor broke into English while talking about it. As French 221 students we know this to be a semi-rare occurrence, due to the fact that she is not completely fluent. Of the character Boule de suif, she said, "Her name is literally Fat Ball." Immediately, one of the kids in our class bursts out laughing and can't stop for five minutes, so we all start laughing. It was nice. We don't typically laugh a lot in French class. This is because nothing in French is funny. French is terrible.

This is a must-read for French speakers. This short story almost single-handedly motivated me to continue learning French. Maupassant’s writing style is magic and so richly descriptive. His commentary is sardonic and blunt. I love reading what he has to say, and I love how he says it. Ce livre met en évidence comment la langue française peut illustrer la société d’une perspective complètement unique, riche et claire grâce à comment la langue est construite. À mon avis, il est impossible de capturer le message acerbe que Maupassant présente ici en le traduisant dans les autres langues. Pour cette raison, cette nouvelle est un chef-d’œuvre de la langue française !
