Very good for what is essentially an unsurprising, straight-up romance. Greatly lifted by the structure (20 years spanned by having each chapter cover the same day in the calendar every year), extremely accurate character observation and perfect laugh-out-loud dialogue. Would consider another of his but wouldn't rush to it.

OOh, I liked it!! The writer of 'Cold Feet', one of my favourite shows on tv, can also write books I see. I read it almost at one sitting, it was unputdownable. I liked the characters and how their lives formed. It was about two persons and their lives together and separately during about 20 years. One thing troubled me a little bit, it seem that Nicholls has some issues with one thing, and he's repeating himself a bit - you'll see what when you read the book...

I've surprised myself at how much I enjoyed this book, especially as I'd say it wasn't my type of book. Definitely worth a read.

I liked the premise, but was disappointed. Dexter is a pain in the arse and Em sounds lovely, but self-righteous. And their dithering just gets tedious. The end was moving, but I didn't quite get it - he loved her more than he realised?

Having really enjoyed You Are Here and Us by David Nicholls, I thought I’d read One Day, his much earlier and much loved novel published in 2009.
There are lots of positives: DN writes excellent characters and interesting, often funny dialogue. (He probably couldn’t write a bad novel.) The novel is well structured as it switches between the two main characters, Dexter and Emma, for two decades or so from when they first meet in 1988. There are interesting additional characters too. He captures the different years very well by reference to events, music, technology etc. and shows how the characters develop and change over time.
However, the one thing that spoilt the novel for me was that I loathed Dexter. I just couldn't get over the fact! However, I will continue to work through all DN's other novels because I love his writing.

This book was so heart-wrenching and emotional. It was a bit of a slow start but once you learned about the characters and their stories, the plot moved much quicker.
Focusing on the evolving friendship in the 20 years after finishing University on the same day every year. By exploring love in a multitude of different forms, it truly emphasises the passing of time and how quickly lives can change for the better or worse. As someone in their 20s who is confused about the future, it was a comforting read.
