Another re-read to end 2023, I thought the brilliance of this book might have dulled in the years since I first read & fell in love with it years ago - yet I was still weeping at the end.
The characterisation and heart of this book still make it one of my favourites, and re-reading it felt like catching up with old friends. I love the influence Hardy has on the book and the parallels between Em & Dex and Bathsheba & Gabriel. Also love reading anything set in Edinburgh - instant magic.

The premise of this story was interesting...the same date throughout 20 years. The ending left me a little disillusioned. Didn't think that everything had to be as difficult as it was portrayed. All in all, was a good read.

This was a roller coaster. Slow to start, then got better, then I didn’t want to put it down. Then I was cringing, afraid of what was going to happen, back to enjoying it, to finally just sad and then sort of alright at the end. Throughout it all I just kept telling Dex what an ass he was, how much he was wasting- opportunities, time, love, etc. Overall, it was a good read and illustration of a painful subject.

Heartbreaking. I agree with reviewers below, not since Atonement have I felt so "emotionally cheated" and unsettled after finishing a book. I fell madly in love with Dex and Em, and towards the end of the book, I wanted to peek ahead but willed myself not to. After they got together, each chapter was like "are they still together??" and I was over the moon to find out they were. That's when the rug got pulled out from under me and...what can I say? I barely got through the end of the book. I just teared up watching the trailer for the movie, for pete's sake!! I'm a sucker for happy endings though, which is why 4 instead of 5 stars.

It is as good as people keep saying. ALSO, it includes maybe the first extended references to T.I.E. I have encountered in literature outside of theatre for youth books.
