I like the Morse series but this book didn’t seem as attention grabbing as the previous two and thus took me longer than expected to finish reading.
Overall, it was a good story but it dragged a little here and there and Morse’s leecherous side was somewhat more evident than in previous books.

When I started reading this, I realized I'd read it years ago, but didn't really remember it and had failed to write a review. Wish I had - would have saved me the tedium of wading through this ridiculously complex and confusing book. Note to self: DO NOT READ THIS AGAIN!!
WELL, four years later and I sure wish I'd read my review. What a tedious, uninteresting book. The only thing it has going for it is that it brings home directly to the reader the boring and incessant grilling of suspects by Morse - over and over and over. Fifty-six pages from the end I'd finally HAD it and sought to look at reviews - and by golly, there I am, a ghost from the past warning me - STAY AWAY!! DON'T BOTHER!

It was the first ever Colin Dexter book I read and I don't quite know what to think. I used to love the Morse TV-shows but somehow this book wasn't completely what I expected. Maybe the gritty air of younger detective novels has made me expect more action than older books offer.

A few too many false steps and confusions at the last minute for my taste. Inspector Morse as a character did not quite have the charisma to carry the book. Otherwise, a neat little package.

Well, I liked this more than 1 and 2, but I'm still not enamoured. :(
