I LOVE this book. I felt entirely transported when I read it and was filled with wanderlust. Someday I will definitely read it again.

Read when I was 15. I remember that we owned this book and it was recommended by the book, Success in High School. My notes: Heyerdahl and his companions start out to prove a scientific theory, that Polynesia was settled by men from South America. They attempt to reconstruct the probable route of the voyage railing for thousands of miles in an open craft.

Did the ancestors of the Polonesians come from South America? Thor thinks so and sets out on a raft with his Norwegian buddies to see if it's possible. The result is a fantastic true story that the reader, more than once, will speculate on the sanity of the adventurers, but also learn a lot. The book is very well written and is positively fish-slapping fun. I picked this up yesterday simply because it was in a nice collectors edition and cheap, I'm usually not one for adventure tales and it was only because of the author's theory that I decided to read it right away. Their adventure out on the open ocean is a mix of the expected and totally unexpected, pick up a copy and see how Thor and friends made their way across the pacific on a square-sailed raft.

Just saw the movie of the same name and was reminded that I read the book, probably in high school.
