I picked up this book because it is the first in a popular series at my library and wanted to see what it is that people are interested in. It is a thoughtful book, and the mystery is well laid out. But it did not strike a chord with me. When it comes to mysteries, I usually go for juicier, high emotion stories that get my adrenaline running and that isn't the vibe here. It was not a fun book for me, but that doesn't make it a bad book.

It was different, not totally captivating but interesting French Canadian village mystery. I liked Inspector Gamanche and Nichols.

SOMEONE recommended this book to me, must remember never to trust them again.
Annoyances:
- author bends over backwards trying to have characters that are eccentric, instead they are just unbelievable, way over the top
-do adults really bully other adults in a community if they don't have to have anything to do with them?
-there is a gay couple, and sometimes they are reserved and normal, then suddenly they act in the most annoying sit-com gay couple way
-a main character, Clara, is portrayed as messy with bad hair, but only once in a while, again, forced eccentricity
-of course, she turns out to be a brilliant artist
- why introduce an eager police woman, and then turn her into an eye-rolling idiot?
-the characters were cartoons
All the characters were unbelievable and unlikeable.

Solid, though I have the feeling I would have enjoyed this more when it was first published. It has a gentle, slower pace that had me craving a little more adrenaline, but is well crafted nonetheless.

Interesting and fun without being either too creepy or too cozy.
