This book inspires...it makes you think of how all classrooms, neighborhoods, etc should actually operate. All welcome, all celebrated.

This rhyming picture book could be a great way to start the school year, or maybe even start every month of a school year - reminding children ages 4 to 7 that diversity is a positive aspect of shared spaces. Diverse hair & skin colors are depicted, and a variety of clothing styles which run the gamut and include gender-neutrality. When the families are shown in the last few scenes at home and at the Back to School event, they include an assortment of configurations, and they all get along happily together.
I like the rhyme - it flows smoothly *if* you practice it, because it is not 100% predictable - the lines don't have 100% identical meter, which in my mind makes it better, because it's not boring.
The missing teeth on multiple children on almost every page are a little jarring, to be honest! Perhaps because it is meant to feature 5-and 6-year-olds, and the illustrator knew many of them are losing teeth...but still, it's weird how that detail pops out at you!
I will read it to a class, and try to revise this review with feedback.

Really sweet book, open and affirming to kids of all races, cultures, and backgrounds. If only all schools were like this. (In my town, a lot of the "diverse" kids go to different parochial and private schools. But they all come to my library!)

A book that highlights inclusivity in a fictional classroom. I loved the diversity in this book, and it’s a must have for all classrooms an bookshelves.

Pair this with Jaqueline Woodson's The Day You Begin. This rhyming book celebrates diversity and honors ALL people with the repetitive line, "all are welcome here." A must-have for all classrooms and homes.

Great diversity and a great message. Should invite alot of good questions from young readers about the differences between them and some of the characters.

Oh my goodness! This book is in my top five most favorite books ever. It’s a must-read as a teacher the beginning days of school and a must-buy for bookshelves/children!
