Hell's Corner

David Baldacci

3.9 AVERAGE

I noticed a poster ad for the book while riding the metro. I made a mental note to check it out of the library.
Four months later, I see it displayed on the new arrivals shelf! Of course i checked it out- duh!

I loved it! The characters were deep and interesting. The plot twisted and exciting. And the surprises just kept on hitting you! The whole time i was reading the book, I felt as if a movie was playing in my head; it truly seems like it would be an action/suspense movie.

It was fun to imagine where the event took place because its an actual place: Hell's Corner!
All I can say is great writing and a great story. I'm definitely checking out more of Baldacci's books (doesn't his name sound like one of a chef?!)

Good plot with interesting twists.

Oliver's last journey was improbable, unbelievable, and a little hard to get through.

I loved the first couple of books in the Camel Club series. I think I devoured the second book in just a few days.

This one took a while. The problem with constantly raising the stakes is that the weight of the endlessly spiraling calamities grows too great for my suspension of disbelief to bear.

An ex-CIA hitman saving the president? Sure! Taking down a corrupt casino magnate? Okay! A bomb laced with nanobots? Ugh.

I powered through despite the cringe and sighed a complex breath of relief at the bland and somewhat predictable ending.

Oliver lives to see another day. I live to explore another book.

Another great Baldacci read.

So here I am. Years later. This is it. The last book in The Camel Club series. I had just finished Book 4, “Divine Justice” when I discovered there was a Book 5. My review for (Book 4) “Divine Justice” is here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/6523230689

I almost feel sad saying goodbye to the series. But in many ways, I feel happy because it took me this long to even realize that there were two last books in the series that I hadn’t realized existed until recently. So, this was like a happy reunion, too.

I am breathing it all in. Re-entering the world of Oliver Stone aka John Carr as he is called into service for the President of the United States on a special mission to investigate a bombing that occurred at Lafayette Park, known as Hell’s Corner, located across from the White House. (Hence: the title of the book!)

Who could have been responsible? And who was the target? Was it the British Prime Minister? Or someone else? And why?

But most importantly, who would do this?

Oliver Stone who is comfortable working alone, but now finds himself once again working for the government, a team, and an MI6 agent, named Mary Chapman to discover the truth behind the attacks.

“The bogeyman appeared to be winning the war of perception in the hearts and minds of the citizenry.”

So, how would they tackle this unknown “bogeyman.” Could it be the Russians, or drug dealers out of Mexico? And why specifically when the British Prime Minister was visiting the President?

And, when things seem to be getting too hard to handle, will the Camel Club members come into play to help save the day?

Readers can plan on a lot of twists, turns, action, suspense, diversions, short chapters, an unexpected finale (did anybody expect this one?), well-developed characters and loss of sleep to finish this last book. I certainly did!

Holy wow!! The end was awesome! I now need to catch up on the rest of Oliver Stone's (aka John Carr) story!

I enjoyed the suspense and mystery of this novel. I wasn't sure "who done it" until the end!! This book was easy to read and was difficult to put down since I wanted to find out what happened next.

2.9. A little too convoluted for my taste.

Stone is at it for one more time. This time though, he is actually hired by the government after an explosion rocks Layfatte park and the cause is unknown.

The series is getting a little repeative, but overall was good. Of course left open for the next book in the series.
