If you didn't like (or "outgrew") these novels, this will decidedly not be your cup of tea. However, if you enjoyed them (*ahem* "for what they are") or otherwise pine nostalgic for Weis & Hickman's masterwerk... Well, the annotations add a bit of twists to the text.
For example: why they abandoned the "hey let's just write what happens in the games we play" approach early on in their writing cycle. (HINT: PCs die too quickly when confronting dragons.)

The canonical edition. If you've read Dragonlance and loved it you must read this version!

I picked this up, my first Dragonlance book(s), since I love Weis & Hickman's Deathgate Cycle. This one is the first book that they wrote together, and it does show. I think the writing started to flow more by the end, but coming from their later work, it just wasn't the same quality. This was a good book, and I imagine that for anyone who's read more of the series that it gets even better, since the characters will be more fleshed out and have more sentimental value.
The annotations themselves were a mixed bag. A few were really interesting, some were redundant, and quite a few were just references to other books that fit into the storyline. They didn't really bother me, but I think they could have made them a lot more interesting, or just have a foreword or afterword with each book. Afterword might have been best since there were a few spoilers in there - I guess they didn't expect people who'd never read the book to have this edition.

This book was so much better when I was twelve. But kind of like visiting with old friends.

"Until he could resolve his own inner turmoil, the raging division between the elven and the human inside of him, he would never know peace."
"No hero is ever perfect. Perfect heroes are boring and without interest. They have nothing to which we can relate. Imperfection, however, is almost certainly the defining trait of humanity - and as such, gives Tanis a quality to which all of us can relate."
