Loved the first half of the book - then it really stalled and the writing became less fluid and less interesting. But worth the effort.

Pirandello is one of the great modern Italian writers, and his classic IL FU MATTIA PASCAL is a must-read. A bitter man is wrongfully mistaken to be dead by his family, so he decides to run away and create a new identity, a blank slate that might give him a second chance at enjoying life. Many have dreamed of such a fantasy, yet Pirandello shows just how hard it is to live a lie as big as this, where every action ultimately has a (negative) reaction to Mattia's psyche, where his old and new personas start to blend together. Terrific book!

Another work that confirms Pirandello as one of my favorite authors. The plot of the grave encounters in chapters 13 and 14 discouraged me a bit from reading, but I kept going. The only thing that was worth the entire chapter was the kiss that started the reflection that made him 'come back from the dead' for good.

On the surface a simple enough tale, yet one guided and sustained by a masterful irony. The art of irony has been all but lost in contemporary literature (nowadays it’s hollow and/or overt), which is why I prefer the work of yesteryears. Here the tone is comic—but a veneer for the tragedy at its core (a decidedly Italian irony, if you will).
