The repetition and lack of content earns this 2 stars. Could be used to start a conversation with students about what makes a story interesting and worth reading. Perhaps it'd be better if I read it out loud.

A picture book collection of two-sentence stories. Dry and predictable.

Pictures are (obviously) an important part of a picture book. After all, "picture" is in the name of the format, right? The structure of the story is key, too. And poet Rebecca Kai Dotlich has provided us with spare, but strong, structure in One Day, starting with "One day...I went to school. I came home." In between the words, images by Fred Koehler tell the rest of a story that includes a late arrival, science class mishaps, and ice cream. The fun of these stories is in the details that reward child and adult readers (lookers?). It would be interesting to know how much of each story was the contribution of the author or the illustrator ... or a collaboration.

Great for one-on-one or small group read-alouds, maybe not for bigger groups because poring over the pictures is a big part of the experience.

5 practices: play, talk, write (have kids draw their own in between story)

6 skills: narrative skills

This story makes my mama heart SMILE! There are super cute (digital) illustrations throughout with a sentence on each 2-page spread that could technically be an entire story by itself. Each page looks entirely different as we follow a little pig-tailed girl going through many every day adventures -- some quite mischievous. Most illustrations are atop boldly-colored backgrounds beginning with banana yellow, and going through turquoise blue, lavender purple, pink, brown, etc. These short "stories" are sometimes wittily hidden right within the illustrations. I think most emergent readers will enjoy these stories. I borrowed this copy from our library, but now I WANT THIS BOOK! So cute for mamas of busy, messy, adventurous Littles. <3

This is a fantastic fusion of art and text, that reveals a bigger story than either medium tells alone. A cute, energetic little girl who says, "One day. . . I went to school. I came home. The end." The illustrations, however, reveal a much more detailed and interesting story.

My mom gave this to my five-month-old daughter for Christmas, and I can't wait for her to 'read' it because this book invites readers to take ahold of the story and become storytellers themselves. This book is one where reading becomes an act of creation--perhaps every book does that--as readers look at the illustrations and infer from visual context what happened. It also grants freedom to young readers to expand upon stories, invent or embellish narratives and take part in the storytelling. Each reader will get a different story out of this book, which is both a tribute to the author and illustrator and an empowerment to the reader.
