One Day, the End.: Short, Very Short, Shorter-Than-Ever Stories by Rebecca Kai Dotlich

4.0

Pictures are (obviously) an important part of a picture book. After all, "picture" is in the name of the format, right? The structure of the story is key, too. And poet Rebecca Kai Dotlich has provided us with spare, but strong, structure in One Day, starting with "One day...I went to school. I came home." In between the words, images by Fred Koehler tell the rest of a story that includes a late arrival, science class mishaps, and ice cream. The fun of these stories is in the details that reward child and adult readers (lookers?). It would be interesting to know how much of each story was the contribution of the author or the illustrator ... or a collaboration.
