This book didn't make me as frustratingly angry as the last few. Yes, the entire gang was mostly involved, but it wasn't like they were all privet jet flown to another country to bag a murder like it wasn't an International Incident. And thankfully Eve wasn't the victim stand in like she's been for the last bunch. So it was a decent murder mystery without *all* of the annoying tropes that have plagued the last few books. A lot were still there, but the Over The Top World's Best Cop wasn't as heavy-handed.
I'd like a book that didn't have to cameo every single character again though. We know there are more books coming, so maybe leave some of the people out each time.
And I noticed the casual mention of having 3rd wedding anniversary approaching, so I'm going to guess the next book, if not the one after that (time moves SLOWLY through 54 books) will have some sort of focus on this.

The In Death series, are by far the best of Nora Roberts's work. I say this, as someone who has shamelessly read about 80% of her extensive written work. The consistency is mind-boggling, especially in regards to the audiobook narrator she has picked. I don't have much experience with female narrators, mostly male narrators, but Susan Ericksen has given each and every character such a distinctive voice and has remained consistent over the past 54 books. I can't read the in-death series without Susan Ericksen bringing them to life for me because she's attached to this series as strongly as Nora Roberts is.
My only niggle is that the relationship between Roarke and Eve is too perfect right now and I miss the days of conflict, such as when Eve got jealous of that ex of his, Magedelaine, or some such. I need their relationship to get shaken up because as much as I love the mystery aspect, they're the reason I continue to purchase these books, and in this one, Roarke was there but to be honest he sort of blended into the background and the killer took the forefront. I am sad because Susan Ericksen does this very sexy Irish accent for him and I barely got to enjoy it, but alas, it doesn't deter me from thoroughly enjoying this book. Also, I miss the banter between Somerset and Eve, none of that here either. The inter-personal relationship really took a backseat compared to the criminal investigation in this story.. hence the 4.75 rather than 5 stars.
The mystery aspect was very good... and I desperately want to make a comment about it all but it would give away info that's better left for self-discovery. I will just say it was really good, and I enjoyed getting into the heads of a lot of the characters. That's one thing that Nora Roberts always does so well, allowing us to step into the minds of the victims and the killer. She gives us a complete experience. Loved it, highly recommend but hell... this is one author that doesn't need a recommendation.
Fingers crossed in the next book Eve & Roarke have a blow-up, jeez, never wished so hard for something to go wrong in a relationship so that they can fix it hehe ^_^

I love this series! When I start reading an In Death book, I feel like I’m visiting old friends. The plot is always different, even though you know Eve and her team are going to find out the whole story, the path there is always interesting.

A nice detective story, which takes place between two different time planes, but which, as lately happens, leaves little room for the "main characters", which are then the main reason why I keep on reading this series.
Un bel giallo, che si svolge tra due diversi piani temporali, ma che, come ultimamente capita, lascia poco spazio ai personaggi storici, che sono poi la ragione principale per cui io continuo a leggere questa serie.
I received from the Publisher a complimentary digital advanced review copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.

My daughter collects this series, so after she has read it and given it to her friend to read, I get it a few months later. Really there's nothing to say about the pace and the repartée or anything - you can't argue with the popularity of Eve Dallas and her cohorts. Occasionally the subject matter is particularly gory but this one was not so - so, all good.

2.5/3 stars. JD/NR did shake up the formula a little with the Then/Now perspective switches, which was refreshing. And the whodunnit was a decent twist.
Still, I can't pinpoint just exactly what it is, but this one left me wanting.

54 books and counting.
And JD Robb still manages to tell an incredible story.
Abandoned in Death is one of the better ones recently - with a different type of storytelling. We get the Before and the Now of WHY it happened with the present tense with Dallas and co. I loved this story for how it highlighted the simplicity of sadness with the murderer.
