Don’t think the storyline/plot was as strong in this book but the character arc and development definitely was. The characters are just so well written and loveable in their own way. I just wish there had been some references to powerful.

Of all the stories that could have been told after the way book 1 ended, this has got to be one of the most boring.

It made the world feel smaller, like the only consequence of a long-built rebellion trying to make a stand against a tyrant king is that now one girl is going to be in some nebulous form of trouble. Maybe she'll be sentenced to death, maybe she'll fall in love. Read along as she crosses some indeterminate length of desert to find out! (Spoiler: it's love)

There's very little (if any) character growth and nothing really changes in the grand scheme of things until the end, and even that felt underwhelming.
It feels like the next book could start with a 1-page conversation between Kitt, Kai, and Pae, and everything will be cleared up.

This book made me retroactively like Powerless... less.

Also, making out in a sewage drain will never be hot.

This book was a bit of a let down because there is zero plot!!! There were so many more directions I expected this to go and it went in none of them. This book is a ton of back and forth between Paedyn and Kai and it got really old. I also wish we got more of Kai’s perspective because you could tell he had some character growth based on his actions, but we didn’t get to hear any internal thoughts about that change. The tension between the characters was really good at the beginning and just kind of fell apart  throughout the book without reason. I guess I saw the ending coming because we got zero hints at anything else during the story, but it still made zero sense to me and kind of made me annoyed. It feels like you could have slipped this book except for a couple of chapters and then start reading the third. I love these characters and the world but this book didn’t add a lot to either of these.

Honestly I did genuinely love this book, but it is somewhat of a filler between powerless and fearless.

It follows Kai and Kitt as they battle with their feelings following their fathers death at the hands of Paedyn, with kai hunting her in his role as the enforcer and Kitt stepping into his new role as king.

There was definitely some shocking twists in regarding to feelings and some actions that are made, but the main consensus is it is a way of working through passion and anger  following the death and destruction wreaked and ordered by the old king and the lies he may have spread.

Overall I can’t wait to get to the final book and find out how Paedyn and the brothers tale truly ends.

This book was more romance and less fantasy/adventure. It was a bit repetitive and predictable at times, but I enjoyed it for what it was and I am definitely looking forward to the next book!
