Everyone sucked.
And the protagonist was such a pushover I wanted to throttle her just as much as I wanted to with Helen, Martin, and Roz. Even Sherlock….
It is not a great sign when a mystery in a book can be resolved through a single conversation.
And if Martin had not be such a repulsive coward this book would not exist.
I just don’t think this was well executed.
I fought to be engaged and I fought to want these characters to succeed.
One of the neater aspects of this story is the fun magic system. Seriously for a person that consumes books like I do, this is basically a cool superpower.
Not happy with this one but I am still curious to see where this goes especially with a potential arch nemesis on the horizon.

It's a rainy spring in Wilfred, Oregon, and as usual, nothing is quite as it seems.
One mystery leads into another which leads into another and so on. The deeper I got into this book, the more it felt like that classic gift prank - open a box to find a smaller box, only to find yet another, smaller box, and so on. The twists and turns just kept on coming. And of course, Josie can't help but get involved.
But there's something very strange afoot in Wilfred, and a decades old mystery really lies at the heart of it. Unravelling those threads leads Josie down quite a few rabbit holes. And her habit of finding herself in the middle murder investigations has not gone unnoticed. Quite the opposite, in fact.
Someone, or something, has taken notice of Josie, and I'm not sure if it's for the better. And while Josie has a solid support network in Wilfred now, she's still keeping a huge part of herself a secret from them, cutting off a level of support she could probably use.
Her secret is going to come out at some point - it's less a matter of if, and more a matter of when. And with this spooky, creepy something or other inching around her, I have a feeling it's going to to happen sooner rather than later.
But I really loved that the mystery sucked me right in. I was enthralled, and all I wanted to do was solve the mystery right alongside Josie. I also loved the focus on the plot this time around, rather than the relationship between Josie and Sam. And while it really is lovely seeing them together, and seeing them build a future together, that tension (well, part of it) is now resolved.
But there is one niggling factor that could throw a wrench in their happily ever after - Sam still doesn't know that Josie's a witch. And there's really no way of knowing how he'll react when he finds out. And I have a niggling feeling he's going to find out in the most dramatic way possible.

Though this was part of a series, it was very easy to follow on its own. In fact I enjoyed it so much that I’m requesting the first volume from my library. The characters carried the story well and endeared me to the book from start to finish, though the story did drag at points and I would have liked to see magic explained and utilized more than it was.
This was the very definition of a cozy mystery. Smart and puzzling enough to keep you interested without making the reading experience stressful. The main character’s conflicted feelings over keeping her magic secret from her partner added an interesting layer to the story, and several ominous events that take place in this volume set it up well for its continuation. I will definitely be keeping an eye on this series.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Kensington n Books for this ARC. This is my honest review.
