4.5 stars. This was an exciting and engaging story like before, but I found myself grow increasingly frustrated and stressed out by how completely unfair so many things were for Amari throughout the story.

This was SO good. Is it odd that after only 2 books, BB Alston might be one of my favorite writers? In terms of writing itself, Alston does such a fantastic job of creating vivid imagery mixed with movement and realistic, fun dialogue throughout every beat of this story. There is not a “white room” to be seen in this novel and it was such a fun ride.
That, paired with the rising tensions and escalation in plot, made this one of my favorite sequels I’ve read in a long time. And THE ENDING. Book 1 was such a delight and book 2 really really delivers.

Really enjoyed the vibes and the plot, I just wish it was more focused. It seemed like the author was trying to introduce more of the supernatural world, and it would jump from place to place time and time again. Overall, a great read though and can’t wait for #3.
