I had been waiting a long time before I finally came across a copy of this book.

The premise intruiged me very much, and I was looking forward to read about this Beast Mistress in the ancient wood of Eld. And boy it did NOT dissapoint.

The book is written from the Point of View of what would essentially be The Mentor in any other fantasy novel. And it works quite well. The beasts weren't as prominent as I expected, but still prominent enough, and the focus lays mostly on the emotional aspect. And it that way the beasts suffice very well.

Had her young protogé been the protagonist however, it would have been a much different book. Bigger and more epic of scale. And I could've enjoyed it very much too, but I am happy for the way this book turned out. I loved the fairytale quality of it that otherwise would've been lossed.

Indeed this is simply a splendid book, well worth the wait and one of the best I've ever read.

4.5 stars. This book has a dreamy, old school fantasy almost fairytale feeling about it. I really enjoyed it!

This was a charming and easygoing fantasy tale packed with magical beings, wizards, and witches. The storyline was straightforward, but the writing really stood out. All in all, for 200 pages it was a delightful read. 3.75*

"You can weave your life so long — only so long, and then a thing in the world out of your control will tug at one vital threat and leave you patternless and subdued."

Like the best fairy tales, The Forgotten Beasts of Eld uses the language of myth and fantasy to explore experiential truths, especially the joy - and sorrow - that comes with solitude, companionship, childhood, and motherhood. Very highly recommended.

This book was ok but I didn't really care for Sybel. I thought I would enjoy her connection with animals, but I didn't since they were enslaved to her. Although they don't seem to mind in the end, so maybe I am more upset than they were.

It was a good story about Sybel's growth as a person but that was basically all the story was. The world building was basically non-existent and there is some kind of magic with names but you never really get a handle on what exactly it is.
