3,5 stars. Compared to 'A Sicilian Romance', which I read last year, I felt that Radcliffe's plot development was more plausible and structured in this later novel. Moreover, the nature descriptions and tension were great and the plot wrapped up nicely. However, there was a big section of this novel which seemed inordinately long and pointless and slowed the narrative down for me and ultimately lessened my enjoyment of it.

I FINISHED IT FINALLY i’m honestly not quite sure why this was such a pain to get through but i felt like the pacing was way off? i like gothic fiction but this just kind of felt very underwhelming all the way through and the plot just isn’t as compelling as it could’ve been. anyway 3 stars bc adeline is aroace and she ends up in a queerplatonic relationship with her husband and clara, love that for her!

This book had such promise. There’s a band of misfits and an abandoned abbey in the forest with a skeleton and secret rooms. This could have been a tale of mystery, thrills, and found family. However Radcliffe decided to drop all that and focus on a character who’s only character traits are crying over her misfortunes and being tragically beautiful. The entire plot is just her running away from a man who can’t take no for an answer as she occasionally recites poetry. I tried so hard to finish this, but it thoroughly lost my interest and disappointed me.

Den kunne fint vært hundre sider kortere. Jeg liker at det var twists, men de fungerer best når man er engasjert, og jeg leste hver side motvillig
