Outstanding!! This is one that will stay with me for awhile...I can't remember the last time I thoroughly loved a heroine as much as Aminata. There are usually things about a book that I would "fix", but not this book and not this character. Absolutely engaging, moving, horribly mortifying but yet somehow still inspirational.

Would have given four stars but it had the most frustratingly implausible ending I've read in quite a long time.

I read this when I was 12 for school. I do not recommend it for anyone that age. That heavily reflects in my rating, I only have the impression from that age for this book and thus my rating is what it is. At the time it felt very long and drawn out and I was bored, I didn't finish it and left the last 50 pages unread.

This book has left me emotionally spent. There are so many things I want to say about it but for now I will say read this book
Review: After sitting with my thoughts about this book for some time, I wanted to come back and say it was impossible for me to stop reading is book. Aminata and her plight consumed my thoughts and so many emotions raged as I considered how unjust the world was and continues to become.
Aminata says: "But there are men, women, and children walking about the streets without the faintest idea of our nightmares. They cannot know what we endured if we never find anyone to listen."
Snatched and kidnapped from her homeland as a young child, witnessing the murder of both her parents in the opening pages, my heart was ripped out. I learn d her name, experienced her nightmares that happened in the happenings of her everyday life.
She says, "the pain of my losses never really went away. The limbs had been severed and they would forever be missing."

I thought it was a good book but the main character was to perfect, to "powerful", she didn't react like a normal person would have. She was a Mary Sue.

Everyone should read this book. Heartbreaking and beautiful, the story of Aminata Diallo is one we all need to hear. Lawrence Hill does a wonderful job of weaving history into his fictional account of the life of a woman stolen from Africa at the age of 11; he brings history to life with great skill, and it really makes you think. I enjoyed the read immensely.
