It took me a while to get used to the author writing the inner dialogue of the main characters such that they are unreliable narrators of their own feelings, but once you got the hang of it it was clever. I actually like how they ended it overall, even if it is a bit cheesy.

This was a bit slow in the beginning and there were some convenient plot elements in the second half. But I still really enjoyed it, this author’s writing is so engaging. Overall it’s a bit more than 4 stars but I couldn’t quite get to 5 either.

I'm often so disappointed in sequels, but so much care was put into this one - and it shows.
All the major characters have thoughtful and challenging endings. Lots of action, twists and turns that make you want to read more.
General Ooyang and Xu Da ended up as favourites for me, their stories pulling on my heartstrings to the end.
I'd really recommend this duology. Such a good read.

my heart broke too many times while reading this. it feels bruised and yet fulfilled because this was an excellent sequel and conclusion to a masterful duology. shelley parker chan is such a talented writer. i felt sympathy for all the characters in this series despite their selfish wants and their terrible insistence to follow their fates even if the end may not be worth it.
more thoughts to come!! but know that i loved this very much. still feeling quite feral over everything that happened. what a duology indeed.

Incredible, one of my favorite books of all time. Stunning character work, devastating lows and thrilling highs couched in beautifully crafted sentences. The handling of queer characters is masterful. Also the navel battle towards the end of the book is easily one of the best battle sequences I’ve ever read. Needless to say, I loved this book.

He Who Drowned the World brings back our favorite enby warlord. Within the first 100 pages lit a city on fire and stole an army…just a banger way to start. #shelleyparkerchan conquered this sequel and wrapped up every loose end.
