The Black Reckoning, the final book in The Books of Beginning series, has been a brilliant end to the trilogy. Kate must reconcile her love for her family with her love for Rafe--if he is even Rafe anymore. Emma's search for the Reckoning takes her into the world of the dead, and the love between Michael and Willomeena is just too sweet and funny. My favorite new character in this book has to be Willie the giant--he's just the perfect comic relief. I listened to the audio version and of course, Jim Dale's rendition was utterly captivating. I look forward to seeing what's next from John Stephens!

Really solid ending to my favourite childhood series. I only got back into reading recently, so the nostalgia from being able to read the first two again before finally reading the reckoning for the first time was a 5 star experience in of itself. But this book was really the perfect ending to the story. I am so glad I got to read it, Thank you John Stevens.
Despite all of that, I finished reading this book an hour ago and I'm still crying, how dare he kill Gabriel and Rafe, I know it makes the most sense but goddammit. Time to go write fanfic where it was all a dream and everyone is happy ig 😭😭😭😭

Still suspenseful and for the most part well-written, but probably my least favorite of the trilogy. (But worth the read for the closure!)

It was fine, a reasonable and reasonably entertaining wrap-up to the trilogy.

This trilogy really delivered, getting better with each successive book. Initially I kept seeing echoes of other children's fantasy books in the plotline, enough so that it was a little jarring. But by book 3, Stephens definitely owned the story and it felt fresh and engaging. I'm looking forward to seeing more from him as an author.

I do still feel that it makes a better tween book than a teen book, even though the lexile reading level of book 3 is more than 100 points higher than (cough) Twilight (cough). As an adult reader I could possibly in the last chapter read more into some scenes that would make it a teen book, but I think a child reading it from an 11 year old's point of view would simply read the words for what they say. (He lay beside her and held her as she sobbed.)
