In my opinion, the story was slow and the characters were nothing special. Willow has no emotions except embarrassment and "love". I found Caleb Black to be a bit creepy at times. Considered giving up a few times but I hung on hoping things would get better. They did not.
This book was actually really good! Bought it with some other silly romance books, but the plot was actually very interesting- very horse-girl driven- but still interesting!

I think that 2-stars is being generous when it comes to this book, however, it's not as bad as a book I read earlier this week and as I can't give half-star ratings (making my view that this book deserves 1.5-stars) this will have to do.
Picked for the first 2020 episode of Romance isn't Dead, I ploughed through this book as quickly as I could. I didn't enjoy it over much. The characters were well-written, enough that I took an immediate dislike to the male protagonist. I am not sure how he expected anything to go his way, he was out for vengeance and kept on quoting the Old Testament "An eye for an eye" as though he hadn't read the more forgiving "Turn the other cheek" in the new book.
Willow was strong, determined and definitely oblivious to the fact that her guide was only with her (not because of the money she offered to pay, but it turned out she couldn't) to seek revenge for the seduction and death of his only beloved sister.
I am sad that I didn't like this Alpha, but he was misguided and downright nasty. Calling Willow a wh*** in a slightly less obvious way "Fancy lady", because he didn't believe her (admittedly weak) story that she was the wife of the man she was searching for. It's only after he's finally managed to seduce her that he realises she can't have been one of these fancy women...but the damage has been done, the thoughts are in Willow's head.
I am happy that they have a Happily Ever After, but admit that while I was reading it I was cheering her on when she fought back, when she said no and determined she was going to be the Mistress of her own fate...though it almost doesn't end well for her or anyone else!
My review is mine, and you may disagree with me. I would love to hear your thoughts on this book if it's one you've read and if you think I'm wrong in my views (bearing in mind they are only opinions) I would love to know what you liked about it...

The very beginning of the book (the first chapter or two) was a bit slow, but I ended up liking the story once things sped up. I didn't really like the way the characters talked. They were a bit bland, but the story itself was interesting, so I kept reading.
The ending didn't really satisfy me. I liked the romantic buildup, but the ending wasn't written well. Though I liked Caleb at first, he ended up being a jerk, and I feel like Willow just gave up. The only reason they really ended up together was because of obligation.

About the book......Escaping the ravages of the civil war Willow must leave behind all she knows and trust her life and future of a dangerous gun fighter.
My five stars is for when I originally read this book in 1999, and I think it’s only far to keep that five star rating.
When re-reading Elizabeth Lowell’s Only His I can honestly say I enjoyed it as much as the first time around. I loved the characters Caleb Black and Willow Moran. There adventures together crossing the San Juan mountains was an enjoyable read and the author does a wonderful job describing the breathtaking scenery and mountains. One of my favourite parts of the book is Willow’s love for her horses, Ishmael and the mares, their strength carrying Caleb and Willow through the mountain passes was amazing.
This book was originally written in the 1990’s and my only criticism would be the love scenes, I didn’t feel they needed to be dragged out for nearly two chapters, back in the 90’s I wouldn’t have batted an eye at this, so feel it’s unfair to compare this book with any of today’s popular romances and sex scenes.
I read all of Elizabeth Lowell books back in the day when they were first released, unfortunately I got rid of all my paperbacks, but I definitely want to purchase them all on my kindle and re-read them all, especially her medieval series.

Just didn't capture my attention. The way the hero and heroine interacted with each other just wasn't my jam. I would return to it someday though - it may just have been my mood.
