The Navajo Nightmare by David Sodergren, Steve Stred
4.0
Such a fun read! I definitely enjoyed this one. I love westerns & I love horror. We need more in this genre!! I’m blowing through Sodergren’s books - just can’t get enough. Enjoyed the take on the dual writing, but thought it would be GREAT to see this as a series.
My biggest complaint is that this wasn’t long enough. I wanted the characters, especially in the 2nd half, to be more fleshed out. Sodergren does this so well, where Shred could have taken some more time on character development. I wanted to know more about Linda & her past. More about Carter & his losses. Especially, I wanted to read more about Lester.
Really hoping the western horror picks up - would love to read more like this! 4.5/5

Just like all of the other reviews, you must read the Content Warnings on this book on the authors website BEFORE you read this book. I honestly think there should be more listed. Take them seriously.
I picked up this book because it was so highly rated & I love a good dark book. But wtf is this. I can’t believe it has SO MANY 5 star reviews. I’m struggling on even rating…This book is all fantasy - it’s so unrealistic. There are so many dangerous elements including violent rape. I had to skim through a lot of icky points, especially when Zade is narrating. The “relationship” between Addy and Zade is nothing short of toxic and downright grotesque at times.
I think it’s incredibly important to note the themes of this book are problematic. I had a REALLY hard time looking past the graphic descriptions of child abuse and trafficking paired with the fact that Zade CONTINUOUSLY calls Addy “little girl” or “baby girl” & “tiny” in sexual situations. It feels pedophilic. Also, the writing is absolutely terrible?!?
Overall, gross.

DNF at about 50%. Just had to give up, unfortunately. Although the premise is unique and frightening (and very gross), the story itself is quite boring. I hate to not finish a book, especially one I’ve been trying to get through for so long. I think I need to stop getting recommendations from BookTok…
Uzumaki by Junji Ito

This was actually my first Manga and definitely won’t be my last. I haven’t been particularly interested in it, but Junji Ito came highly recommended to me. Ate this up in one day! A wonderfully unique story and the art was really incredible.
Only taking off a half a star because the middle felt more like a series of short stories vs more cohesive to the plot as it did in the beginning and end. Did not take away from the horror, if anything, it helped to build that fear. I really look forward to reading more from Junji!!

Night Shoot by David Sodergren
4.0
The ending of this one made it for me! A perfect & beautiful ending in a totally tumultuous last 20 pages.
Originally I was thinking “eh, this one is a 3.5 for me.” The ending alone brought it up to a 4/5. Night Shoot was a bit of a slow burn which isn’t typical for Sodergren, IMO. So many parts of this book I could envision and…smell…lots of “oh gross” moments.
Overall, wasn’t my favorite, but still enjoyed!

Those Across the River by Christopher Buehlman

Another incredible story from one of my all time favorite authors. Like Between Two Fires, Beuhlman does an awesome job of making you feel like you are living these stories. It might have helped that while reading late at night, my 4 year old pummeled into the room & I quite nearly shit myself. A great atmospheric, slow burn (but picked up in all the right parts), horror.
4.5/5 - more, more, more!!

This was…incredible!? The art was amazing & the concept was so over the top that it made every chapter really fun to read. Totally scary and equally hilarious. 5/5!
The Vessel by Adam L.G. Nevill

Wow, I absolutely loved this!! Walked into it blind other than knowing it’s been circling around the other folks that read similar stories. This gave me big Midsommar vibes, which I loved. A great little twist at the end and unexpected. Looking forward to reading more from this author!
The Perfect Victim by David Sodergren

I’m consuming these Sodergren books like popcorn! I can’t get enough! I was really weary to start this one - knowing only that this was a story of the kidnapping of Katy, a 16 year old daughter of a very wealthy movie producer. Anything with kids is a big no for me, but after reading a few reviews, I took a chance. I’m glad I did, because this was all feminine rage bad-assery. I appreciate how Sodergren writes women. He does a great job of balancing emotion & wit with pure resilience. Super fun read - 5/5!

Definitely a unique concept & fun read. I love a good western. I enjoyed the supernatural element, but overall I wish I liked it more. Repetitive at some times & read a bit weird at others. Otherwise written well. A solid 3/5 for me!
