I really love Elif Shafak. Her writing, storytelling and ability to craft complex and loveable characters is just spectacular. I loved every minute of reading this book. I was never bored, which is very rare for me lol. It was just so interesting, the setting and all the characters. Leilas friend group was so amazing. It kind of reminded me of the show Pose in the way it handled the found family trope alongside grief and opression. This is a really amazing book and the second best book of Shafak's that I've read.
I loved the experience of reading this book. I loved being immersed in the story, being with the characters and the setting. This is a very atmospheric and immersive book. What felt especially magical were the scenes during plays. Something I didn't expect from this book was to sob my eyes out during the last pages?? M.L. Rio basically tore my heart out of my chest, stomped on it, threw it against the wall, lit it on fire, crushed it under a hydraulic press. And for what. My one complaint is that I wished the relationship between Oliver and James was a little more fleshed out in the beginning and middle part of the story. But other than that I really really loved this book and it will probably become a new favorite of mine.
Don't know why it was neccessary for the main character to go on a transphobic rant all of a sudden... I get wanting to write realistic characters, but that just felt uncalled for.
Let's go lesbians!! On a Sunbeam is an incredibly impressive graphic novel! I didn't find the romance that interesting, but the story was such an adventure! I love how big, dramatic and colorful everything was. The art in this is mega impressive. The larger panels with landscapes took me to another world, I loved losing myself in this universe and following along the incredibly loveable crew on their quest.
