The Sapling Cage by Margaret Killjoy
3.0
Loved the discussions and explorations on gender and trans identities, very approachable and fun to do it in the context of magic and witches. But just, didn’t love the book? Was not attached to any of the supporting characters, maybe too many of them to feel any stakes? Character development felt flat, also found myself wanting more world building. Seemed a bit YA-ish which isn’t my personal favorite, but that’s just personal taste, but ultimately fairly fun?

Read this for a bookclub and would not have finished it if I’d have just picked this up on my own. It was fine, and I think my expectations were a bit too high for an indie press. Could have benefited from an editor, as the story itself is cute and fun but a bit disjointed. Enjoyed the harder sci-fi elements, appreciate some queer and autistic representations, but the characters all felt a little, underdeveloped? Ultimately - this is okay and just fell a bit flat for me, probably better for someone looking for kind of brain off book with some semi-spicy queer cozy (yet at times a bit intense?) alien invasion sci-fi.
