i have no idea how to rate this because there were dozens of things that i disliked about this, but also the parts that were good, were damn good. i don't know what to say. do NOT read this book but also, i'm kind of obsessed and i'm on book 3.
L + disliked the choices this author made with the theodora mythos available to him + flop author + you will never understand theodora like i do + presumably cishet boomer man + crafted the driest (in terms of reader entertainment and interest) AND most irritating (in terms of theodora historiography) version possible + pushed thru the first one despite my recurring doubts but had to dnf this one
she is one of my historical blorbos i don't have to be reasonable about this
this will definitely not be everyone's cup of tea for very valid reasons but it was mine. the ancient mediterranean was ironically not my favorite historical focus to study, but it has Always been one of my favorite historical novel settings. on top of that i love historical novels that follow ordinary or otherwise not royal / titled characters (look away from my storygraph history...... i know. i didn't say i DISLIKE books that follow titled characters! and it just floods the genre. beggars can't be choosers.)
ADORED THIS if there was anything i disliked i no longer remember it (writing this 2 months later) but i do remember kicking my feet n giggling. loved them
