Only one thing to do, really.
Only one thing that can be done, really.

i. LOVED. this book. it is like a black hole it sucks you up and farts you out all shredded and distorted but alive. so you cannot help but go like. What? But you feel as if you are changed forever even if you don't quite understand it

there will be a bunny shaped hole in my heart for the next month or so probably. the tone, the prose, the plot, the weird eeriness the CRAZY GIRL PROTAGONIST!!! the concept, the surrealist "magic" if u could even call it that, the tension between an artist and their creations. Did i mention THE CRAZY GIRL PROTAGONIST! like. yum. yum. yum. i could smack my lips and go like this: "yum!" forever. literally such a good book this was right up my alley in a way that so many books r not, each part feels so distinct but after i finished i found myself flipping back thru some moments and going like OMG! OHH ME GURD! so good. so good. i can't wait to check out more of awad's stuff :3

very hard read but a very good one….. jeez😧Lauren is an interesting protag & the hyperempathy concept is v neat, I wish it was fleshed out more but otherwise the worldbuilding is so tight and stark and it’s just. Oughie

I can see why ppl rly liked this book but it just was not for me. In fact it was so not for me that I was groaning the whole time I was reading it, what a Herculean feat that I finished it At all.

I didn’t like the main character I sincerely dislike when books don’t use quotation marks and I know why some authors don’t do it but I simply dislike it immensely I feel like it flattens the tone of the book so hard. I don’t love apocalypse tales and I think this book’s publication right before COVID is very spooky but there was little in the way of an interesting story or world building imo, the whole concept of the fevered was interesting but idk.

I guess it was just the tone of this entire book. It was just so flat. And very like. Okay, I said. As I spoke to her I walked down the street and opened my phone to go look at Netflix— that’s right, Netflix, because this story is rooted in the real world, remember?

Anyway. I didn’t care I had no investment in these people. Bob was like the only character who got any depth most of the time u forget there are even other ppl there lol. & I truly despise the otessa moshfegh school of not knowing how to end your book so you end it badly
