Something on the Side by Carl Weber

Finally done. This book took forever to get through. The pacing drags and most of the characters are one-dimensional. These were some of the most selfish, immature women I've ever read about. They didn't learn anything even when the message or lesson was slapping them in the face. I wanted to yell, "grow the hell up!" so many times. So, a plus for making characters that drew such a reaction from this reader, but some of these sections could've been scaled back or cut all together.

A little (ok, a lot) predictable. Some of the humor from previous books was missing, but I liked that people in their mid-30s weren't as quirky or immature as some of her younger characters. I have mixed feelings about Enjay's character; his portrayal and what it stands for bothered me a lot. It was a blown-up caricature of in-the-closet...urban men. With all the groping, playing up the promiscuous image, etc. That storyline itself was dragged out for so long, that the reveal at the end didn't really have a major effect for me. Harry himself was introduced so late in the book that I wondered why even bother. I'm also over the killing likeable characters. This one especially didn't seem to move the plot along in anyway or make a huge difference in developing the main character. And her father/trust issues and why she didn't want to get into a relationship with Flynn weren't executed well. It took me forever to realize that's what the writer for trying to show us. I really liked Gigi, though a near 19 yr. old still wanting her parents back together for Christmas fell a little flat for me also.

Let me just say that I KNEW IT!!! From the last book, I just KNEW who Big Poppa was. Oh, that damn Jerome.
So, this book might be my favorite BGBC, although it doesn't really count as one. It moved at a much better pace. Lots of tension and suspense. The wrap-up was a little rushed. I guess I just wanted more... Still don't like the repetitive use of the title in the narrative. Makes me cringe, b/c it usually seems so forced.

A little urban, a whodunit, and sexy all rolled into one. I do wish we got more info about Daryl, but maybe we'll get another book about his past. Loved the twist at the end. I thought for a minute that Krystal was right about Connie.

Good suspense, with a sweet love story. A few red herrings in there, but by the time they thought it was the baby momma, I'd figured out who it really was. Didn't like the throw-away hotel scene with Freddie, so I'm hoping that comes back in a later novel (glad to find out this is a series). Pacing was good; my tablet says this is close to 1000 pages, and it didn't feel like it at all. It has characters that I can get invested in and care about. On to read the next one.

3.5 stars. Very good first book. Such a tough subject. My issues with it are more structural than story. I wanted to slow it down, break up all the dialogue, get into the heads of the characters more.

It's never the sex that really gets to me about this series (though it's so very HOT). It's Nora's cheekiness, and her obvious care and affection for the people around her. It's the underlying message that it's okay to just be who you are, even when the world says you're weird or wrong.
OAN: Harlequin needs better proofreaders. I can pick out exactly where track changes were probably made and accepted, but not double checked.
