The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen
4.0
"...The Queen of the Tearling feels as though you are actually following the rise of the leader through history and seeing how her decisions affect herself and others. The main focus was Kelsea growing as a ruler and it was something I greatly appreciated. In a lot of these types of stories, the protagonist is always beautiful beyond compare and there is always a love interest which much of the story ties around. This is not one of those stories. She is surrounded by people she trusts as well as people she does not and those are her relationships. Multiple times she is described as ‘plain’ and that is the reasoning behind why she is not seen as a romantic object to those she finds attractive. While I don’t fully agree with the sentiment, I can appreciate that it allows her to be a much more realistic character who can place focus on more important matters and not simply looking for a man to make her feel complete."
