I loved Ruth. LOVED HER. I loved her and Evans relationship and how he took his time and went at her pace while still being comfortable/ confident in himself. The Kubbah sisters are amazing and I rant for people to read this series….always. This was a reread for me and it did not disappoint the second time around.

This book was hard to put down! Hell, the book was so good, I bought the second book in the series by Phase 2. The writing was amazing and the plot twists had me pleasantly surprised when my predictions were wrong!

The chapters are short and to the point which is great in my opinion. It did feel like the author has a sadistic streak because the phases in the book would end at THE JUICIEST , most captivating spot and for those in book clubs, it is SO HARD sticking to the reading schedule when an author does that.

BTW, the use of saturated, vibrant color is amazing in this book.

This was a good short story collection. You can definitely tell that Jemisin was experimenting with various devices and structures in this book. Each story pulled inspiration form somewhere but still that that amazing N.K. Twist to it that made it feel so original. I’d choose a couple of these for lesson plans if I was still teaching, specifically the ones that play with plot structure!

Some of my favorites were :

1. The City Born Great (I can’t wait to read The City We Become because of this story)
2. The Effluent Engine (needs to be a book or movie ASAP)
3. Valedictorian (this NEEEDS to be a novel. PLEASE NK!!)
4. The Evaluators
5. The Elevator Dancer (perfection)
6. Cuisine does Memoires (I got over an argument with my husband because of this one.)
7. The You Train (What NYer wouldn’t like this one?)
