Book Review: Haunted to Death by Frank Anthony Polito

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐½

Hey folks! So, I recently had the pleasure of reviewing Haunted to Death by Frank Anthony Polito, and let me tell you, it was a perfect October read. This book is the third installment in the Domestic Partners series, and it’s just as engaging as the previous ones. If you’re into cozy mysteries with a sprinkle of ghostly charm, keep on reading!

A Quick Summary

This Halloween season, our favorite home renovation duo, Peter (PJ) Penwell and JP Broadway, find themselves in a bit of a spooky situation. They’re tasked with restoring Woods Hall, a gorgeous old manor in Pleasant Woods, Detroit, that has a chilling backstory. Picture this: 25 years ago, during a Halloween party, the glamorous Emma Wheeler-Woods—dressed in a stunning wedding gown—plummeted from a balcony. Was it an accident? Or did someone give her a little push?

Now, Fiona Forrest, Emma’s daughter and an indie music star, has inherited this haunted beauty and is determined to restore it. As PJ and JP dive into renovations, things start to go bump in the night, and they can't help but wonder if they’re dealing with a ghost or something much darker. With a Halloween deadline looming, they juggle renovations, a haunted house, and the mystery of Emma's death—all while trying to keep their reality show on track.

My Thoughts

Okay, let’s talk about PJ and JP. DIY experts; they’re also life partners. Their dynamic is just so charming! PJ is the anxious one while JP is the brave heart—together they make quite the team. It’s like watching a perfectly balanced recipe come together.

This book has that delicious Halloween vibe, especially with the backdrop of an old mansion filled with secrets and possible curses. The back-and-forth storytelling really kept me hooked; it was like peeling back layers of an onion (a spooky onion!). You get to meet some of the townsfolk who were around during Emma's tragic party, and their insights add depth to the narrative. Plus, Fiona’s celebrity status throws in a nice twist to the mix!

I loved how the author paints PJ and JP’s everyday life. They’ve got rescue dogs and their own lovingly restored home that feels so relatable. It’s cozy in all the right ways. And let’s not forget about their sleuthing—while they might be nosy (who isn’t?), their gentle probing feels appropriate as they try to uncover the truth behind Emma’s death.

By the time I reached the end of this book, I felt a genuine affection for these characters. They’re endearing enough that I’d happily join them for a cup of coffee in their craftsman-style home! If you’re looking for a fun read that combines humor, mystery, and a touch of the supernatural, I’d say give Haunted to Death a shot.

Overall, while I didn’t find it to be absolutely perfect (hence the 3.5 stars), it certainly delivered some cozy vibes and kept me entertained. I’m already looking forward to seeing what PJ and JP get into next!

Book Review: A Dark and Stormy Knit by Peggy Ehrhart

Rating: ★★★½

I have to start off by saying that I absolutely adore the cover of A Dark and Stormy Knit. It’s whimsical yet eerie, perfectly setting the stage for a cozy mystery. As a fan of the genre, I’ve always appreciated a book that can capture attention before you even crack it open. Now, onto the review!

This latest installment in Peggy Ehrhart’s series follows our favorite crafting duo, Pamela Paterson and Bettina Fraser, who run the Knit and Nibble group in the charming town of Arborville, New Jersey. On a stormy Halloween night, their usual gathering of spiced cider and cookies is disrupted by something far more sinister: a murder right next door.

The victim? Adrienne’s sister, a vibrant college professor visiting from New York City, is found fatally stabbed on the porch, leaving everyone in the neighborhood on edge. The festive decorations around town make it easy to mistake a real corpse for a dummy, which adds a unique layer to the unfolding drama. As Pamela and Bettina dig deeper into Adrienne's social circles, they find that this is no ordinary case and that the town is rife with secrets.

Having previously read book 4 in this series and ultimately shelving it as a DNF due to excessive descriptions, I approached this new addition with a mix of hope and skepticism. I was pleasantly surprised to find that while the over-descriptive style is still present, it didn’t bother me as much this time around. The pacing felt much better aligned with the plot, allowing me to enjoy the unraveling mystery without feeling bogged down by unnecessary details.

That said, for a book that is marketed as having a Halloween vibe, I was a bit disappointed. Other than the murder occurring on Halloween night, there wasn’t much else in terms of festive atmosphere. I was hoping for more seasonal elements to really immerse me in that spooky spirit. Nonetheless, the mystery itself was engaging and well-constructed. It held up nicely as a standalone read, which is a huge plus for those of us who may not have followed every book in the series.

Overall, A Dark and Stormy Knit offers an intriguing plot filled with twists and turns, though it could have benefitted from more Halloween flair. If you enjoy cozy mysteries with a dash of crafting charm, this one is worth picking up—even if you might want to save it for cooler nights when you can snuggle up with your knitting!

IMPORTANT NOTE: The author makes it clear that this book is NOT intended to be a field guide and should not be used for identifying mushroom species, particularly those meant for consumption.

Rating: 5 Stars

As an avid mushroom lover and forager-in-training, I couldn't wait to dive into Field Notes from a Fungi Forager by Ashley Rodriguez. From the moment I laid eyes on that stunning cover, I knew I was in for a visual treat. Book Review: In the Winter Woods by Daniela Kulot, Translated by Elizabeth Lauffer

Rating: 4 Stars

I recently had the pleasure of reviewing In the Winter Woods, and it's an adorable children’s picture book that completely charmed me! The story revolves around Squirrel, who is a bit of a hoarder when it comes to his food stash. As winter sets in, Fox, Mouse, and Raven find themselves in a tough spot—hungry and searching for anything to eat. They hear Squirrel boasting about his secret food reserves and think they might get lucky if he shares a bit. But Squirrel is not about to part with his treasures, and before long, he forgets where he buried them!

What I loved about this book is its heartwarming message about compassion. In the end, it’s only through teamwork that all the animals manage to fill their empty bellies, reminding readers of the importance of sharing. The story will definitely resonates with the little ones, teaching valuable social-emotional lessons along the way.

Now, let’s talk about the illustrations—wow! They are absolutely gorgeous! Each animal is beautifully depicted, with unique personalities that really jump off the page. I found myself enchanted by the vibrant colors and details that bring the winter landscape to life. The text is short and engaging, making it perfect for younger readers.

However, I did notice a few parts where the flow felt slightly awkward, which might be attributed to translation nuances. That said, it doesn't detract too much from the overall experience. Whether you read it solo or share it with a little one, this book is sure to be a hit. It also makes a thoughtful gift for homeschoolers as it promotes sharing and kindness.

Overall, In the Winter Woods is a delightful read that leaves you feeling warm inside—just like a cozy winter day! I highly recommend it for anyone looking to add a lovely story to their collection.

Book Review: Hummingbird/Aamo-binashee by Jennifer Leason, Norman Chartrand (Translator)

Rating: 4 Stars

I recently had the pleasure of reviewing Hummingbird/Aamo-binashee, and I must say, it’s a little gem that touched my heart in ways I wasn’t expecting. This beautifully illustrated picture book strikes a balance between deep emotion and simple storytelling, making it accessible for readers of all ages.

At its core, the book tells the story of a young Indigenous child who feels lost and isolated, grappling with feelings of confusion and self-doubt. The narrative draws on the teachings of Kokum, who warns about the lurking danger of Windigo—an embodiment of darkness that can eat away at one’s spirit if we’re not careful. One fateful night, the Windigo's chilling presence creeps into the child's heart, amplifying their feelings of loneliness. However, just when hope seems dim, a hummingbird arrives, sent by the ancestors, to guide the child back to the light. Through this encounter, the hummingbird shares invaluable lessons about resilience, love, and connection, reminding us that we are never truly alone.

The artistry in this book is simply mesmerizing! Each page is a visual feast that beautifully complements the text. The bilingual aspect—melding Anishinaabemowin and English—adds an additional layer of richness and authenticity to the storytelling. It’s not just a book; it feels like an experience steeped in culture and tradition.

What truly resonated with me is how personal the story feels. Knowing that Jennifer Leason draws from her own experiences makes the narrative even more poignant. The themes of self-love and hope are universal yet deeply rooted in Indigenous wisdom, allowing readers to reflect on their own connections to family and heritage. The message that our ancestors are always watching over us is both comforting and empowering.

Overall, I would give Hummingbird/Aamo-binashee a solid four stars. It’s a heartfelt reminder that in our darkest moments, love and guidance can come from unexpected places, and that connection with others is vital in finding our way home. If you’re looking for a book that beautifully blends art with meaningful storytelling, this one should definitely be on your reading list!

A Review of Dark City Rising by C.L. Jarvis

Rating: 4 Stars

Pray, allow me to regale you with my thoughts on Dark City Rising, a most captivating tome penned by the talented C.L. Jarvis. As I turned each page, I found myself transported to the enchanting yet perilous realm of 18th-century Edinburgh, a city on the cusp of profound transformation in the realms of medicine and philosophy.

In the year of our Lord 1748, we are introduced to the astute and daring Professor William Cullen, a man possessed by a fervent desire to overhaul the antiquated medical education system. However, unbeknownst to many, this noble academic harbors a secret that could very well alter the course of history: he is concocting a new magical system, one that aims for egalitarianism in an age dominated by the aristocracy’s darkly enchanted grip on power. Alas, as fate would have it, murder strikes when a brave nobleman who dares to support Cullen faces dire consequences. This ignites a fierce realization within Cullen that confrontation with the nefarious forces arrayed against him is not merely probable; it is inevitable.

Accompanied by his exceptionally gifted former pupil, Joseph Black, our protagonist delves into an academic world rife with hostility, all while racing against time to unearth the source of the aristocracy's power before his own secrets are laid bare before the ever-looming threat of assassination.

Now, let me express how utterly beguiled I was by the cover of this splendid volume—it is simply perfection! The fusion of medicine and magic amidst the backdrop of a city on the brink of enlightenment creates an irresistible allure. Within its pages lies a fascinating exploration of medical practices intertwined with mystical elements, enriching our understanding of history while indulging our thirst for fantasy.

Moreover, Jarvis has masterfully woven together a tapestry populated by both real historical figures and imaginative creations that breathe life into this epic narrative. The pacing is impeccable, and the character development is such that each figure feels vividly real and engaging. It is a rare pleasure to encounter a work that strikes such a fine balance between historical accuracy and fantastical elements.

In conclusion, dear reader, if thou art in search of an enthralling escapade filled with well-crafted characters and an intriguing plot, look no further than Dark City Rising. It is a delightful blend of history and magic that shall surely satisfy your literary cravings. I bestow upon it a hearty four stars for its brilliance and charm! What more could one possibly desire?

Book Review: Murder on the French Riviera by Helena Dixon

Rating: 4 Stars

I recently finished Murder on the French Riviera, the latest installment in Helena Dixon's delightful Miss Underhay series, and I have to say, it was quite the ride! Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the French Riviera in late spring 1936, the novel transports you to sun-soaked beaches and glamorous hotels, where the only thing more shocking than the stunning views is the sudden appearance of a dead body.

The story kicks off when Kitty Underhay, on a mission from Whitehall to find a missing man, arrives in Nice with hopes of enjoying some leisurely poolside time. But, as fate would have it, instead of savoring a perfect croissant, she and her husband Matt stumble upon the lifeless body of Fred Bennett, the very man they were sent to locate. As they navigate through the vibrant yet dangerous world of casinos and suspicious characters, it becomes clear that this is no ordinary murder mystery. With a cast of intriguing suspects—including a wealthy widow and a dubious aristocrat—Kitty and Matt are thrust into an investigation that feels like a high-stakes spy thriller.

What I loved about this book was how it blended the charm of a cozy mystery with a palpable sense of danger. It felt like there was always something lurking just beneath the surface, making each page turn feel more thrilling than the last. Dixon has done an excellent job crafting a well-plotted narrative that keeps you guessing until the end. The tension was definitely ramped up compared to previous entries in the series, which made for an exhilarating read!

Kitty and Matt are wonderful characters that you can't help but root for. Their chemistry and sharp deductive skills shine throughout the investigation, making you feel confident in their abilities—even when the odds seem stacked against them. Plus, the picturesque settings Dixon creates always add an extra layer of enjoyment to each story. This time around, with the ominous shadow of an impending World War II looming over Europe, the stakes feel even higher, enhancing the plot beautifully.

All in all, Murder on the French Riviera is a fabulous episode in the Miss Underhay series and one I highly recommend! If you enjoy a good mystery with a touch of glamour and suspense—especially for fans of Agatha Christie or cozy crime novels—this book is sure to captivate you. So grab your favorite beverage, settle into your favorite reading nook, and prepare for a delightful escape into a world where nothing is quite as it seems!
