Excellent and thorough review of the structure of class and poverty in America, dissection of the most prevalent arguments and misinformation around it, and appraisal of all of the types of solutions that should be campaigned for to move towards a poverty free society.

I think this is one of the most thoughtful, moving coming of age book I've ever read especially in terms of the handling of topics of mental health, religious guilt, suicidal ideation, identity and dealing with all of this through adolescence without losing sight of your community.

I only held back from a 5 star because although I knew the premise beforehand, I was not prepared for the deep existential despondency it put me in.

A really clever book about the art of wordplay, made me feel really smart recognising the more complicated substitutes Ella and her cousin used for forbidden words.

I love how you can tell the respect and passion she has for the scientific concepts is equal to that for the history behind cultural crafts and the stories of people who are innovating it today. The inherent tradition of engineering and the science of creation. Also really makes me want to visit the countryside.
