This book is brilliant, and the subjects explored are vast. Rich's structural analysis of "motherhood" as an institution is incisive. She blew me away. Rich relays perfectly what motherhood is on the daily, in private and public, and the constant sources of conflict/pressure in mothers' lives. I love how frequently Rich references other works; this book is a beautiful "jumping off point" for other herstories that I'd like to read into (i.e. allopathic medicine, midwifery, anthropology, cultural myths, religion).

One reason this was not 5 stars for me is that there were a few short sections where Rich moved quickly through a complex subject and it went over my head. I needed some background info that I just didn't find in the book. Don't let that stop you from reading it! Highly recommend!
