It was okay. Nothing particularly groundbreaking, but good for a quick read between heavier books.

Thanks to NetGalley for an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

There was a lot that didn’t really work for me in this book. I found myself feeling like I’d missed something more often than not, which left me feeling confused and lost for quite a lot of the book. It took me 9 days to get through this due to the confusing nature making it hard to be able to follow what exactly was going on in the book, thus making me feel like ‘I’m a bit stupid’ which is not what you want to feel when reading, or as someone with several years of higher education under their belt. It was a struggle to get through overall. It was also definitely more of an NA rather than YA book (received in the Fairyloot YA box). The writing was okay if not good in parts, though there were some grammatical mistakes that were missed in the editing process and it could be quite repetitive.

It did pick up a bit in the second half and I was able to find some enjoyment in the book and slowly understand what was going on a bit more. I also liked that it was set in a university town and that Nicole was actively doing research on art with Kyan’s help whilst he was in the town on his mission. The academic in me loves university settings/research plot lines!

Will likely pick up the second book to see how I feel about the direction the series is looking to be going in and the overall storyline. But I was definitely left feeling disappointed in this story which sounded like it had so much potential from the synopsis and then fell quite flat…

Felt like the pacing was a bit off and that some of the character arcs changed a bit too fast in a short number of chapters to really be able to take in the change for the direction the story was going in.

Palmares by Gayl Jones

Did not finish book. Stopped at 2%.
Pretentious, repetitive and needed so much more editing. I can’t put myself through another 503 pages of that. How this made it to being a published work I do not know.
