South of the Border, West of the Sun by Haruki Murakami
2.0
South of the Border was well written and interesting in the normal
Murakami way...but It was absolutely pointless and stupid. I hate how Murakami treats women but I excuse him bc he is male and his writer's voice is distinctly male (which I mark as a weakness). But the women in this book- the way they're idealized, romanized, conventionalized, and convenient-all for the sake of some asshole guy to feel fulfilled really pissed me off. It's like he took some stale, boring affair he had and romanticized it into some profound lesson on human nature. Basically, he bullshitted the whole novel and everyone eating it up. Very disappointed.
