I think it’s interesting that this novel and the Michael Bay film, The Island came out in the same year. Of course, they are handled quite differently, but the larger concept about what constitutes humanity is prevalent in both texts. I liked this novel for the conversations it can possibly bring out, but I do feel as though the book was a little bit slow for my taste. I’m not saying that all books must be action-packed, for that’s not the case. It was just unbearably slow (for me) during some parts. I also heard people discussing how sad they were at the end, and I just didn’t feel that same sadness. I had empathy for the characters, but I didn’t feel that deep emotional connectivity. I was more angry at the society in which the characters lived than sad about the characters.

Definitely academic scholarship, but it is accessible in many ways. I don’t agree with certain points, and I feel like he coddles his implied reader at times, but overall I think it’s important work.

I read the book in one night. Great story and memorable characters.

I appreciated the storyline, and although at times I felt like there was a lot going on, the author did well tying up the various plot strands.
