This book warns you it isn't a love story and even with that warning, it's easy to fall into the trap of wanting it to be a love story. And then it's so much more and so much bigger and magical. Lovely.

This was great. The last ten pages are just the author trying to convince you of Jesus which felt icky to me, but the rest of the book was startling and heartbreaking.

A lot of people have referred to this as "trauma porn" but I didn't get that, though I see why people could feel that way. I felt like it was much more akin to getting to know someone with a deeply troubled past. You know it the whole time and it comes out in bits and starts and it's awful. I found it deeply moving, incredibly impactful, and felt hopeful and promising, even though it was desperately sad. I thought it was a story, ultimately, of someone who kept getting up and trying again and again and again.
