listen i don't really do long reviews but this book got me worked up and i felt a lot of different emotions im ranting abt it

i started reading this book because the main protagonist is a fourteen year old filipino immigrant and i just Crave representation and i had such high expectations but i just didn't like it???

Spoilera lot of the things were relatable and kinda fun and the book had an overall lighthearted tone but imo it felt vicenza was tryin so hard to assimilate herself into american culture and yeah your fourteen and u just want to fit it but she took things that i do and im proud of (having her sisyer call her ate for example) and discouraged and that just made me really upset???? i understand that she's one if the only asians that go to her school and she had a great life back in manila but like why??? and lying to her best friend about her life in america didn't really sit well with me either,,,,, she just didn't seem that proud of her culture and to be reading it as someone with the same culture and ethnicity who is so proud of who they are and where they come from just really made me sad you know

also whitney she was a whole other thing like why would u put someone down for being a ~~virgin~ and catholic (she called her a goody too shoes or something like that for not being able to skip mass) like man,, shut up,,,,,, do people like you even exist

there were still aspects, the taglish, and characters, isobel, i liked and i really did like the ending you know her mom telling her why they left the philippines, her and her family at the movies, and her dad winning the lottery but it wasn't enough for me to really get me to really like the book

im still glad i read it and im sad that i didn't like it as much as i thought i would but i would still recommend it u know it was a different pov and i feel like if i wasn't filipino i would be less wordked up and enjoyed it more idk
