It's rare that a book grips me in such a way that I honestly don't want to finish it, but this was one such story. It took me over a month once I reached the hole stretch to sit down and see the journey come to its conclusion. This book is not for everyone, but for those it is for it's everything.
Graphic: Animal cruelty, Animal death, Body horror, Body shaming, Child abuse, Child death, Death, Drug abuse, Gun violence, Incest, Blood, and Medical trauma
This is by far one of the more unique and beautiful stories I've read in a good long while. The fact that it's a graphic novel made that all the more enjoyable as a means of actually getting to see what's going on in the main character's head. This is definitely one I could recommend to anyone but especially anyone who has ever had trouble connecting with others or at least reflected on how strange it is to connect with other people.
I'm reading this book at a very emotional time in my life both as a parent now myself and as a child who clashed terribly with their own mother. The depths this story explores spoke to me on a personal level in much the same way the art of the main character spoke to those who saw it exhibited. I would recommend this to anyone on a journey of healing from their past. It may not be a 1:1 fit for your experience but I can almost guarantee you will find yourself and your mother here for better or worse. It's just a matter of what you'll do with that discovery afterwards.
