An Affair to Dismember by Elise Sax
2.0
The writing and pacing is decent. The plot is simple, and the characters are shallow and boring.
Missing Microbes: How the Overuse of Antibiotics Is Fueling Our Modern Plagues by Martin J. Blaser
4.0
Very dense and informational. Author clearly is knowledgeable.
I do have a couple issues with this book. One is that it's pretty fearmongery, so be warned.
Another question I had that wasn't answered is how the author knows that another cause of the "modern plagues" is at play. I can think of 3-4 other major lifestyle changes that humans have had in the same period he is examining, and yet there is not a discussion of any of that.
The final issue I had was that he groups autism in with "plagues" and that's pretty offensive.
All in all it was informative and I learned some stuff, but I am pretty sure we have a few decades more of research before we have answers. I'll chalk this up to "warrants further study."

Buy My Book: Not Because You Should, But Because I'd Like Some Money by John Marszalkowski
5.0
Highly recommend this book. It's a wild ride - if it starts to lose you, just wait a couple pages.
What is this book about? Everything.
If you want to know the meaning of life, this book is a good start. Deeply honest and real with a humorous twist, the author will force you to think about your place in the universe and what it all means.
My bet is that every person who reads this book will:
1. Learn at least one thing
2. Skip at least one chapter
(Sorry, I don't speak German. Yet.)

The Death Factory by Greg Iles

Free via BookBub.
Not my usual thing, but the writing is good. I'm clearly missing some context since it's a book in the middle of a series, yet it still held my interest.

Any Way You Bury It by Lucy Quinn

I got this book for free via BookBub. If you want a cozy mystery with some romance and don't want to think too hard, it's pretty good for that. Don't look for anything else from it, though.
Practical Programming for Strength Training by Lon Kilgore, Mark Rippetoe
5.0
This book pretty much lines up exactly with my lifting experience, and gave clear information about program design that is applicable to many athletes. The information is given in conjunction with "why" it works that way, and the reader is left with an understanding not just of how to program their training, but also how to identify issues and troubleshoot them.
I have some concerns about Rippetoe's recommendation that people training strength should be eating so much protein - I was specifically directed by a doctor not to eat that much, and it sounds like medical science is starting to investigate protein consumption and creatine supplementation (also recommended) as a special cause of renal failure.

A wealth of technical knowledge. Must read for anyone who wants to increase their strength (that's everyone).
OMEGA Exile by Stephen Arseneault

I have a lot of mixed feelings about this book.
I thought the storytelling, pacing, world building, and science were all great.
But I found myself rolling my eyes most of the times a character talked. A lot of the humor was stereotypical baby boomer style gender tropes, comments on alien species stereotypes, or put-downs.
The universe was fairly interesting, I found myself questioning the main characters' motivations or political leanings a lot. The premise of the book is fairly anti tax and anti regulation, so that could grate on some people's nerves. It was hard to know whether the characters' morals were internally consistent or not, and I wasn't sure some of the actions lined up with their proclaimed character.
That said, there's a dog and it's pretty awesome.

Interesting concept, but the writing was simpler than I usually like and the characters felt flat to me. I think this might be targeted at someone significantly younger than me. I usually enjoy YA books...
