I usually HATE amnesia plotlines, especially to a main character and this far into a series, but I am shocked to say I really enjoyed it this time. Thurman continues to impress me with Cal's character development in each of these books, especially when Cal literally can't remember anything about his life. Seeing the human side of Cal was so bittersweet, what might have been if Cal was born fully human, and dang I feel for Niko. I thought the writing was rather impressive, the way Thurman allowed the real Cal to subtly peek through more and more until he inevitably shakes off the amnesia. I felt rewarded as a reader when I could spot each moment of clarity, and the lesson Cal learns about accepting himself at the end was earned, if a bit heart-wrenching. I am so excited to keep reading this series, as I am 100% invested in the whole overarching Auphe-Cal plot.

My favorite entry in the series so far!
Niko's POV really added to the story, and it was so interesting to see Cal and their past through his eyes. Not gonna lie, Niko's POV brought a tear or two to my eye at multiple points in this one. I was also impressed by Thurman's ability to write both characters in 1st person POV but have them feel like two very different people. At no point did I forget whose POV I was reading from, and while I always love Cal's snarky, sarcastic commentary, Niko's thoughtful and sincere (and very conflicted) perspective really stole the show for me this time, showing that Niko is a much more complex character than just being the protective older brother.
