Creatures: Thirty Years of Monsters by John Langan, Paul Tremblay
4.0
Really enjoyed
Creature from the Black Lagoon
-- Very interesting protagonist, sad ending but somehow fitting
Under Cover of the Night
-- Wonderfully suspenseful, element of unknowable horror, left wanting for more.
Rawhead Rex -primally terrifying! Excellent.
Hollow Man - Dread and hopelessness, unknowable terror. Sad for the first hollow man, but the second probably deserved it, that dampened the horror.
Not From Around Here - genuinely terrifying, overtly erotic but that is cleverly used as a horror element. Triumphant and bittersweet ending.
Really disliked
Among Their Bright Eyes
-- pointless, sexual element unnecessary and contributes nothing, do not care for the protagonists
The rest are just so-so, either not so memorable or not at all terrifying. At least even the story I disliked made an impression, the rest just went off-radar. That's worse than being disliked, I think.
Rated 4 because the good stuff is really good.

A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore

This was an alright read, finished it in one day actually. Quite funny and while the plot is predictable, it was a merry ride. Some of the jokes were puerile though, but maybe it was a matter of taste. Good for a day trip. Terry Pratchett he is not, although clearly inspired by the great man.
The House Of A Thousand Candles by Meredith Nicholson

Wonderful fast-paced thriller with plenty of humor. Main character not too likeable but he's much more interesting than your usual paragon of virtue. Lots of great action near the end too. I'm going to look up the rest of this author's work.
Full Fathom Five by Max Gladstone

Really enjoyed the worldbuilding in this one! Especially references to the Swiss bank, insurance schemes, mutual funds and the like. I really adored Pratchett's Discworld universe, and Gladstone's world-building mimics that aspect of Discworld and satisfies my craving for a "connected" world. Recommended!
The Fairies at Browning Grange by Barrymore Tebbs

Pretty interesting although it was rather obvious that the fairies were really aliens.
