Yadriel is a boy, but his traditional Latinx family tends to forget about it. They don’t want to take him in to the community of brujos, so with his cousin Maritza he conducts the ceremony with his own hands. However, his success is tainted by an unexpected death of a member of their community. What’s worse, the body is not found, and during a search Yadriel summons the soul of his schoolmate Julian, who becomes a little too charming for a dead guy…
I adored this book. It was so fun to read, the characters were lovable and funny, and it was overall easy to fly through. I loved how supportive Julian was of Yadriel and how he helped him ease into his own skin. Julian created his lil group of outcasts and basically adopted all the queers, and it was adorable. Maritza was a queen, very strong-headed and ready to rock the world. They were great support to Yadriel, a little reserved and backed out, not ready to be himself fully.
I found the Mexican traditions and the fantasy elements intriguing. I loved how the community’s struggles with poverty, deportations and treatment by the police were integrated into the story. Not only is this book a treat to read, but raises awareness on many topics and does so in a very creative and respectful manner. I fucking love this book, it brought me so much joy.
Unfortunately, I’m not sure whether others will love it as much as I do. Fans of tragic endings probably won’t be satisfied with the conclusion of this story; personally I didn’t mind it. This is a comfort gay book and I was here for it.
