The Color Purple by Alice Walker
4.0
A stunning portrayal of African American life in the South, and a fascinating exploration of themes like homosexuality, domestic abuse, and oppression. The themes may be heavy, but this is not an unhappy book. Would highly recommend.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

This book is a page turner. Surprisingly, I never got to the other two books though.
Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
5.0
My favorite Shakespeare play. Even though it's not ACTUALLY about love (the whole play lasts, like, 3 days and Juliet is a stupid 13-year-old), I like to fantasize that it is. I also like gay adaptations of this play (go figure).
Inferno by Dante Alighieri
5.0
A highly amusing journey through the 9 circles of Hell, and Dante's prose is absolutely amazing. I've used his terza rimna style of poetry again and again when writing poems (especially in Spanish, my second language).
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
3.0
I get that this book is a classic, and that Mary Shelley basically invented the science fiction genre, but I found her prose complicated and boring. The themes are certainly interesting though.
A Mango-Shaped Space by Wendy Mass

A hugely interesting description of synesthesia, and the protagonist is extremely likable. Loved it.
El año del desierto by Pedro Mairal

This book is such a bore... Maria is dependent and two-dimensional, and never contemplates her own emotions. The novel focuses on moving forward the plot far too quickly, so characters are lacking development.
