Recalling a review in Vulture Magazine that said this manuscript should have been released as an academic supplement rather than a title that fed into the mainstream publishing hype machine. I'm not so sure I agree with that. As someone who is an armchair intellectual and also very class-conscious, I appreciated the accessibility of this text, and what it could mean to certain people--namely, young conservative fence-sitters--during this particular moment of social upheaval.
That said, certain violent aspects of the plot (which others have already mentioned), bothered. As did the shiny bow that was tied over the last chapter. Strangely enough, little closure was offered in the way of the livelihoods of Black characters...about whom the entire plot of this story seemed to rest.

Ugh, so wildly decadent. I wish this had fallen into my hands as a teen. It would've been the perfect fodder.
